Speaker Series Event: Dr. Heather Forkey Presents “Off Script: Changing how we recognize and respond to trauma in children”
-
August 15, 2019
9:00 am - 10:30 am
Join us on Thursday, August 15th for Dr. Heather Forkey’s presentation on how to effectively respond to children who have experienced adversity. ACES, toxic stress and resilience by now are familiar concepts, yet professionals are often stymied as we try to impact the health, behavioral and developmental challenges of children exposed to adversity. Practical ways to identify those most affected and impact outcomes for youth who have experienced trauma are still not well described. As a result, these children continue to be misunderstood, misjudged and mis-medicated. We need to look “off script”, and consider what brain science, attachment analysis and resilience research can teach us about recognizing and responding to trauma in ways that work in a variety of settings. We will rehearse practical ways to dialogue with children and families to impact the care of children exposed to adversity no matter what your role – from caregivers and clinicians to administrators and advocates.
